A Christian Guide to Parenting, Jewish Style

BFB140611 High Priest Blessing the PeopleAnother common misunderstanding in Christian teaching is that grace has no place in the Old Testament, and certainly not in the Jewish perception of humanity’s relationship with the Creator.  Permit Rabbi David Forhman to blow that misunderstanding out of the water.  Not only does he explain grace as well or better than any Christian teacher I have ever heard, he also addresses the reason life in the womb is precious to our God and worthy of our protection.

Often we hear that our life in Yeshua (Jesus) is all about love and grace, yet when do we hear about the fundamentals of that love and grace?  How do they work?  How should they impact our daily lives?  How are they manifested in the family – in the relationship of wife and husband, and of parent and child?  The answers should be familiar, but the vehicle for explanation is something new to Christians.  Listen as Rabbi Fohrman uses the Aaronic (priestly) blessing of Numbers 6:22-27 to explain these concepts.  Here is the blessing in context:

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:  “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel.  Say to them:

“The Lord bless you and keep you;

The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you;

The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.”’

“So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.”  (Numbers 6:22-27 NKJV)

Is there grace and love in this blessing?  Yes; the grace and love of God are all over it.  Yet this blessing is part of the Law (Torah), given by God through Moses.  How can grace and love come through the Law?  The Apostle John explained it as he introduced Messiah Yeshua to us.  Ponder this passage as you view these two Torah teachings:

From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.  The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.  No one has ever seen God.  It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.  (John 1:16-18 NRSV)
